Joshua Haugen

| educator | composer | saxophonist |

redefining the contemporary musical landscape, creating music that exists on the edge of impossibility.

Joshua Haugen is a baritone saxophonist and composer specializing in quartertone composition, extended techniques, and maximalist solo works. His music explores the limits of instrumental possibility through works of extreme technical difficulty.

Centering the saxophone as both a compositional tool and performance medium, he employs extended techniques, microtonality, and experimental processes to craft adventurous, intricate, and emotionally charged sound worlds. He has studied composition with David Biedenbender, Alexis Bacon, Christopher Biggs, Lisa Coons, and Andrew Rathbun, and saxophone with Joseph Lulloff and Henning Schröder. His music has been performed in collaboration with ensembles including ~Nois Saxophone Quartet, Sō Percussion, Splinter Reeds, and the Spektral Quartet.
